   The English Pointer

A Brief History of the English Pointer

The English Pointer is believed to have appeared on the scene in England in about 1650, possibly from Spain or Portugal. The pointer and other breeds of dogs initially were valued almost entirely according to their merit for practical purposes.  The pointer was expected to find game.  This utility was the principle that guided breeders in the selection of stud dogs and brood bitches.  The English Pointers transformation began in England and continues today in many parts of the world.

Improving the English Pointer Breed

Improvement in the breed will move at a much faster pace now.  Exciting advances in the field of genetics are opening up opportunities for breeders who are genuinely dedicated to the improvement of  the pointer breed. Attempts to produce the perfect pointer will become a reality in the not so distant future. We will be able to compare the genetic similarity between two prospective breeding pairs and be able to see how closely related two dogs actually are before they are bred.  Their pedigree may show their breeding to be a tight line breeding, when in fact their genetics report shows their mating to be a greater outcross for a particular trait.

Our Hat is off to the American Field Publishing Company

During the year 2004, many of us witnessed the importance  of  DNA  for the improvement of our pointers along with the process it  has already played in the elimination of dishonest breeders.  Breeders,  who  misled the public and misrepresented their pointers using deception in their breeding programs  for the gain of money.  A money value can not be placed on the damage that these  individuals did to the Pointer  fraternity and the Pointer breed.

Numark Kennel cordially invites you to visit our kennel and view our English pointers.  Appointments are not necessary, but a phone call in advance is appreciated.

It pleases us that most all visitors to the kennel always ask about a Pointer resident  mother and her daughters. The mother and daughters look almost identical. They are so similar that they almost appear to be clones.  They have wonderful dispositions,  full of desire to find game, very fast  in the field, possess strong scenting ability, have dark full intelligent eyes, small chiseled heads, straight beautiful high tails and possess the most loving affectionate dispositions imaginable.  These pointers can not be mistaken because of their  beautiful features both in hunting style and conformation. They are from a line that we have been developing for over twenty years and plan to line breed  to our pure Elhew males in the near future.

We are excited about the future of our dogs, but as the old saying goes "The proof is in the pudding."

Our pointers are owned and utilized by a very diverse group of people.  From the weekend hunter and amateur field trial participants to the owners of the number one Fortune Five Hundred Corporation in America.  We receive great satisfaction in the fact that our puppies are being hunted in all parts of the United States and South America with great success.  Occasionally, odd things happen.  The 2002 U.S. National and 25 time champion Miller's True Spirit's mother and the mother of the 2003  U. S. National Champion, Texas Trail Blazer were bred, whelped, and raised at Numark Kennel.  Most credit is due to the owners, handlers, and trainers of these pointers,   but we were thrilled to have contributed a small part to the  development process of two National Champions back  to back in the past three years.
