Origination of the Elhew
Pointers
In 1936, Robert Wehle, founder
of Elhew Kennels received a gift from his dad. The gift was a
female Pointer, called Jem of Fern. The younger Wehle had asked
his dad to bring him the nicest female Pointer that he could find
during his trip to Scotland. Robert Wehle was fifteen years old
at the time.
Jem of Fern was bred to the English
Pointer Frank of Sunnylawn. That litter produced a female
Pointer, which was named Elhew Midge. Elhew Midge was the first
Pointer to carry the Elhew Prefix. The Elhew Kennel's prefix was
Wehle's name spelled backwards. This was the beginning of the
well known Elhew Pointers.

Frank of Sunnylawn,
left, accumulated a total of 63 field trial placements in his career.
He was a top winning dog of that time. The tail carriage is one
of the most significant changes in our American bred Pointers.
As you can see, the early Pointers had a much lower tail carriage.
The correct conformation standard for show Pointers around the
world is a straight tail on a level plain with the back and not to be
carried more than twenty degrees above that plain. This was and still
is the standard in Scotland and England today. American FDSB
Pointer Breeders have departed from the bench standard for a much
higher carried tail. Elhew Matador on right.
